The Post Before Christmas!

‘Twas the Post Before Christmas,
And all Through the Blog,
Not a Notion was Stirring,
‘Cause We Worked Like a Dog!

Yes, this Blog HAS been sleeping for a short while, as it is wont to do when we are (all together now) “Horrifically Busy”, but we can never stay away for too long.  And so we’re back to get in one more post before Christmas 2017!

We’ve published our backlog of comments, and have a bunch of things waiting for you in 2018, so stay tuned.

For now, two things:

ONE:  HERE is my original mentor Mark Evanier on Blogging and what it means to have a Blog.

Not surprisingly, I agree with every word of it and, as I still draw on some of the things I learned from Mark during our old-fashioned mail correspondence back in the early eighties about comics writing, I draw on so much of what he says here about Blogging – before I even knew he said it!

TWO:  I just read an AMAZING Christmas comic this week for the first time ever!  Below is a fantastic half-page splash panel from it!  Does anyone know – or can anyone guess – which comic it is?

We’ll have that answer for you on Christmas Day… but everyone is welcome to guess right now!

See you then!

Merry Christmas to you, too! You'll be happy to know that your third Princess Oona story finally came out today in the second Donald and Mickey One-shot issue.

Thank you, Deb – and the very same to you and yours, especially Fluffy and Mervin.

And, a Christmastime visit from Oona? Oh joy, Donald must be thinking!

I’ll bet Oona could handle that big robot, that nobody’s taken a guess at identifying yet.

That answer will come on Christmas day!

Slightly off-topic discussion, but… do any of you recall where Oona is supposed to live when not bothering Donald? The Oona stories give the impression she's living with Donald a la Bubba Duck, but that can't be right — if nothing else, Daisy wouldn't let Donald get away with having another girl living in his house, especially one who has occasionally given signs of being interested in him!

Nothing is “Off Topic” on Christmas Eve!

As to the question of WHERE Oona lives, American readers got an answer to the question this very week in IDW’s DONALD AND MICKEY # 2, released on December 20, 2017! I will not spoil this, because it’s too soon after publication.

For the rest of you, check Story Code D96246, though you won’t get my dialogue outside of the IDW version… You all can decide if that is – or is not – a plus.

This is, to my knowledge, the THIRD Oona story. Certainly so in the United States. The FIRST, where Donald and Gyro found her – ending with Oona stowing-away on D&G’s return time-trip to present-day Duckburg, was D93505.

At the end of her SECOND story, D93506 which, if Story Code Designations can be used as any indication, would DIRECTLY FOLLOW Oona’s FIRST story, Oona has forcibly evicted Donald’s dog Bolivar from his doghouse – and has taken up residence there!

I presume Oona remained (as they say) “in the doghouse” (where she can still wreak her own special brand of havoc, feed and shelter herself, etc.) until Donald resolves the matter at the end of Story # 3! So, if we consider any number of Duck stories as occurring BETWEEN Oona’s SECOND and THIRD stories, they would have occurred while Oona languished “in the doghouse”.

…Or, if any of you prefer, NOTHING occurred… and the THIRD story directly followed the SECOND! That’s what’s so great about the way these comics work!

Also, in that SECOND story, Daisy clearly does not regard Oona as anything resembling competition. She even HELPS in the effort to modernize / conventionalize her.

As to where modern life takes Oona after this THIRD story, I cannot say – as, to this point, I was only assigned the first three Oona stories. By the end of Story # 3, Oona is in a “good place” (certainly for her) and, if there is going to be any sort of gap coming in her ongoing saga (due to the hopefully-temporary suspension of the DONALD DUCK title), this would be a good place for that gap to occur.

…Though I really do want to see more of her!

I'm not sure whether I want to see a lot more of Oona, but the stories were fun. At least Oona isn't like Rumpus McFowl, Gideon McDuck or Dickie Duck who all don't quite fit into existing Duck family trees. Or Princess Reginella, who is someone who Donald can't have a more serious relationship with because of not just Daisy, but the fact that he'd have to leave his nephews and family. Oona is at a place where she can slip into the background, and only reoccur sometimes, like Fethry, Brigitta MacBridge or Neighbor Jones.

That is exactly what I mean when I say that Oona is now “in a good place”!

...At least as far as American readers are concerned. Many of the rest of you, obviously, know more...
